How lessons work

Three steps. No surprises. This is how 400+ students learn with us right now.

Step 1

You get your own teacher and time slot

Every student gets a dedicated teacher, a fixed day, and a fixed time — every week. It's your slot. Nobody else takes it. Your teacher knows your goals, your level, and exactly where you left off.

Step 2

You prepay your lessons

Lessons are always prepaid, with no minimum and no maximum — we usually suggest 4 at a time, but you can prepay fewer. No contract. Want to save more? Prepay 11 up front and get the 12th free. Trial lessons are also prepaid.

Step 3

On your last paid lesson, you decide what's next

Continue for another block, pause your lessons, or stop completely. It's your call. No cancellation fees, no awkward conversations. If you continue, your slot stays yours.

That's it. Simple, flexible, and on your terms.

No contract, no obligation. You're free to leave at any time.

How often do you want to learn?

Weekly lessons are how students progress. The alternatives exist, but we want to be honest about what works best.

Recommended

Weekly

Same teacher, same day, same time, every week. This is how real progress happens.

  • Fastest progress — muscle memory builds week over week
  • Your teacher tracks your development closely
  • How most of our 400+ students learn

Can't commit to weekly lessons?

Bi-weekly

Every other week, same day and time. Same pricing. Lessons are placed at the beginning or end of a teacher's day to avoid weekly gaps in their schedule.

Progress is slower — we recommend weekly whenever possible. Timeslots are not guaranteed as weekly students and trial lessons get priority.

Occasional

Book individual lessons as needed. Same pricing. No fixed slot.

Subject to teacher availability.

Not sure yet?

A trial lesson is always an option.

  • You only pay for one lesson at your chosen duration
  • No registration fee for the trial lesson
  • After: enroll, try another teacher or instrument, or we part ways — no pressure

Here's how private music lessons work at École de musique du Marché: you choose an instrument, pay a one-time 35$ registration, then prepay your lessons. Everything happens in person at the studio, 288 rue Jean-Talon Est, two minutes from Jean-Talon metro. Lessons are always prepaid, with no minimum and no maximum: we usually suggest 4 at a time, but you can prepay fewer if you prefer. No contract, so you pause or stop whenever you want. Music has no age limit: preschool music starts at age 3 and our oldest student is 78.

Glossary — music lesson terms

The terms that come up most often around music lessons, explained simply.

Preschool music (éveil musical)
Éveil musical (preschool music) is a group activity for young children, from age 3, that introduces music through play, listening and rhythm. It's a fun first step before formal instrument study begins.
Solfège (reading music)
Solfège is learning to read and decode written music: recognizing notes and understanding rhythm on a score. It helps a student sight-read what they play rather than playing only by ear.
Ear training
Ear training develops the ear to recognize sounds by listening: pitches, intervals, chords and rhythms. It's what lets a musician play by ear and better understand the music they hear.
Private lesson
A private lesson is a one-on-one session, one student with one teacher, tailored to the student's pace and goals. Unlike a group class, the teacher's full attention is on that student.
Trial lesson
A trial lesson is a first session to meet the teacher and try the instrument before committing. It's an easy way to see if it's the right fit.
Levels (beginner / intermediate / advanced)
Lessons adapt to each student's level, from someone who has never played to advanced repertoire. Because every lesson is individualized, there's no fixed curriculum or level gate to pass.
Audition preparation (Cégep / Conservatoire)
Some teachers offer targeted coaching for entrance auditions: technique, theory, repertoire and performance confidence. This preparation is aimed at Cégep music programs, the Conservatoire de musique du Québec and university faculties.
Registration fee
The registration fee is a one-time charge of $35, paid only once for life. It is not a recurring subscription.
Prepaid lessons (no contract)
Lessons are paid in advance, with no contract: we suggest buying about 4 at a time, with no minimum or maximum. Buy 11 prepaid lessons and the 12th is free.

Common Questions

How do I pay?
Lessons are always prepaid, with no minimum and no maximum — we usually suggest 4 at a time, but you can prepay fewer. No contract. You can also prepay 11 lessons and get the 12th free. We accept cash, cheques, debit, Visa, Mastercard, and Interac. You pay before your lessons begin.
Can I try a lesson before committing?
Yes. A trial lesson is always available if you'd like to test the fit before committing. You pay the price of one lesson at your chosen duration, with no registration fee. If you decide to continue, you enroll and keep the same teacher and time slot.
What if I need to miss a lesson?
Just give us 48 hours' notice. We'll work with you to reschedule. If you miss without notice, the lesson credit is used.
How long do I have to commit for?
There is no commitment. Lessons are always prepaid, with no minimum and no maximum — we usually suggest 4 at a time, but you can prepay fewer. On your last paid lesson you decide: continue, pause, or stop. No contract, no cancellation fees.
Can I switch from bi-weekly to weekly?
Absolutely. Just let us know and we'll find you a weekly slot. Most students who try bi-weekly end up switching to weekly because the progress is noticeably faster.
