Our Story

From Italmelodie to École de musique du Marché

Born in the heart of Little Italy, our school carries on the musical legacy of Italmelodie, a neighbourhood institution for decades.

Located steps from Jean-Talon Market and Jean-Talon metro, we have welcomed over 4,200 students since 2016. Our mission: making music accessible to everyone, in a warm and professional environment.

Today, 25 academically trained teachers guide over 400 active students every week — from toddlers to seniors, from beginners to advanced musicians.

The Italmelodie storefront at 274 rue Jean-Talon Est — a neighbourhood institution since the early 1980s

A music school in Montreal, École de musique du Marché offers private, in-person lessons at 288 rue Jean-Talon Est in Villeray, 2 minutes from Jean-Talon metro. Our 25 academically trained teachers teach 17 instruments — piano, guitar, violin, voice, drums and more — from age 3, beginner to advanced. Lessons start at $30. They're always prepaid, with no minimum and no maximum: we usually suggest 4 at a time, but you can prepay fewer if you prefer. No contract — pause or stop whenever you like. And music has no age limit: our oldest student is 78. 438-387-3887.

FAQ

Everything you need to know before getting started.

How does the lesson schedule work?
You choose a fixed weekly time slot with your teacher. If your schedule varies, we offer flexibility to adjust your lessons based on your availability.
Can I cancel or pause my lessons?
Absolutely. With no contract, you can stop at any time. We simply ask for 48 hours' notice for individual lesson cancellations. See our full cancellation policy for details.
Do I need an instrument?
Yes, but if you don't have one, we offer a rent-to-own program with no deposit. Your rental payments apply as credit toward the purchase — 100% the first month, decreasing afterwards.
Do you offer online or remote lessons?
Our lessons are in person, at our school near Jean-Talon metro (288 rue Jean-Talon Est). Learning an instrument works best face-to-face — the teacher adjusts posture, fingering, and tone in real time. We don't offer online lessons at this time.
Am I too old to start?
Never! Our oldest student is 78. Music has no age limit, and our teachers adapt their approach to every adult.
What if my child wants to quit after a month?
That's exactly why we have no contracts. Try it with no commitment — most children quickly bond with their instrument and their teacher.
Do you prepare for RCM exams and CEGEP auditions?
Yes. These are two distinct paths and several of our teachers coach both. Exams: preparation for Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) exams, a graded national assessment system, in piano, violin, and theory. Auditions: preparation for entrance auditions to Cégep music programs (Vanier, Saint-Laurent), the Conservatoire de musique du Québec, and university faculties (McGill, UdeM, Concordia).
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept cash, cheques, debit, Visa, Mastercard, and Interac.
